TBS Blues Challenge
May 26, 2009 blues in the triangle
Good Rocking Sam will be competing in the 2009 TBS Blues Challenge…
The 2009 TBS NC Blues Challenge will be Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the Berkeley Cafe in downtown Raleigh, NC. The blues challenge is a professionally judged competition open to North Carolina blues acts that qualifies the winners to compete in the 2010 International Blues Challenge (IBC) and other prizes. The winner also will play in the 2010 Bull Durham Blues Festival.
So time to practice really hard and put together a solid set of original blues music! C’mon out and cheer us on, as well as the other participants. We look forward to meeting some new folks, making some new friends, and getting the word out on a blues/roots band that is busy making new original music!
Wish us luck…it should be fun!

Jack of Diamonds - new track from First Thing Smoking
May 24, 2009 Uncategorized
The track ‘Jack of Diamonds’ is now available! Chuck just finished mixing it, and you’ll find it here for download. Keep an eye on the Music page for a growing number of releases. All of our material will be available under a Creative Commons license, so you are free to download, share, podcast, or totally ignore these songs.
Chuck said…
A friend of mine has a copy of Adobe Soundbooth CS4 that I used to finalize this mix. It’s a really cool GUI that combines some of the best elements of Cool Edit and Sound Forge. Doing basic tasks like trimming heads and tails, minor processing like EQ and compression is a snap.
The song was written around the time when you couldn’t turn on the TV without seeing an ad for a TV poker show. Most of the lyrics while exercising my dog Coda at Lake Jordan. I had just enough time between stick throws to jot down a line or two. The original concept was to make it into a Doc Watson type blues. When I showed it to Mike, he saw that at the heart of it, it really was a Texas blues. It’s been a standard in our repertoire ever since.
A couple videos from last nite’s Blue Bayou show
May 17, 2009 gigs
Good Rocking Sam had a GREAT time playing at the Blue Bayou Club last night, we had a good crowd on a warm spring nite. The folks at the Bayou were great as usual, and a big shout out to the sound guys who really helped make it sound good. Here’s a couple videos we took by just sticking a Flip camera on the wall by the sound board…
First is ‘The New Thing’, which is a forthcoming track on “First Thing Smoking”, our new release.
Hall Ashmore, a friend and regular at Mudbone’s Tuesday Night Blues Jam at the Bayou, sat in for several songs, and he’s here in this clip of us playing “Cheated You Fair and Square”.
Enjoy! We are looking to play the Bayou sometime in September, and can’t wait!

Rehearsal last nite
May 14, 2009 Uncategorized
Here’s a peek at rehearsal at Dave’s place. We’re getting ready for the Blue Bayou Club this Saturday (come on out!). Here’s us working through a song called “Belly Up to the Bar” from the new album “First Thing Smoking”. See if you can spot the ill advised Dick Dale lick! This is why they call it rehearsal, partly because it’s where you learn what NOT to do.

New music on the way
May 13, 2009 Music Releases
We’ve been working on (for too long) the follow up to ‘Luxury Life’, it’s entitled ‘First Thing Smoking’, and is a set of about 13 tunes, most of which have made it into the set.
You’ll see we’ve added an embedded player that has our tunes from our ReverbNation Good Rocking Sam page, and the first four tunes are from the new album. They’re free for download and sharing under a Creative Commons Non-Commercial Attribution license. This means you can give them to your friends, and even repost them on the web for sharing. You can podcast them, you can perform them, you can ignore them…you just can’t sell them (because if we can’t, you can’t). Just make sure you credit the band. If you like it or hate it do us a favor and drop us a line!
Check the tunes out, and come see us at the Blue Bayou Club this Saturday, May 16th.
